Kathryn Rutz

Executive Publisher, Maney Publishing (USA)

My publishing career began at The Haworth Press, an independent book and journal publisher notable for its commitment to emerging disciplines including social and behavioral sciences, information science, agricultural sciences, and gerontology. In production I worked with authors and editors on journal articles and book manuscripts, then moved into editorial development. Working closely with colleagues and leaders in key disciplines, we developed new journals, established book series, and became early adopters of new publishing technologies. As Vice-President of Special Projects, I then had the opportunity to work more closely with societies and associations on joint book and journal projects.

As Vice-President of Editorial Development, this work advanced to support a publishing program comprising books, journals, special issues, publishing best practices, new product launches, workflow redesign, and journal affiliation agreements with societies.

When Haworth was bought by Taylor & Francis, I continued as Acquisitions Editor to participate in the integration of Haworth content. I also managed a large list of journals and developed new titles in emerging and underserved subject areas within social work, behavioral science, and public health. I also worked with societies seeking new publishing partners, evaluated  new product proposals, and adopted evolving best practices for journals publishing.

My work at Maney

I joined Maney in 2011 as Executive Publisher, North America. I am delighted to contribute to Maney's increasing presence in the US, Canada, and Mexico and I am committed to helping expand the company's global impact. It is deeply satisfying to work for an international publisher whose focus is outward: the society, the library, the editorial community, and the reader are carefully considered at every point in the publishing process. The door is wide open to society journal acquisitions and new product development built around meeting needs and delivering opportunities. The atmosphere here is energetic, collegial, and creative, which is an excellent prescription for growth during a period of significant change for the scholarly and professional literature.

I travel significantly on Maney's behalf, and welcome the opportunity to discuss firsthand a society's needs, an editor's views, and an industry’s vision for growth and evolution. Each journal community has its own needs and expectations, and at Maney we have an expansive, informed publishing toolkit with which to explore shared goals.

Current projects

My first area of focus at Maney is materials science, technology, and engineering. Within STM publishing in general, this subject area carves out a broad handprint with lasting impact. Ties to industry, chemistry, physics, technology, natural resources, conservation, and healthcare highlight this field’s immediate relevance to problem-solving and discovery.

To that end, I am interested in talking with those in societies and organizations of all sizes who would like to know how Maney could be a publishing partner. I also welcome communication with scholars about new journals or evolving publishing models and features. Projects and conversation shared with librarians and information scientists are also valued as our parallel fields together adapt to change.
