The history of ethnic minorities in the Midlands: a special issue of Midland History
This special issue of Midland History, guest-edited by Malcolm Dick from the University of Birmingham and Rajinder Dudrah from the University of Manchester, looks into the history of ethnic minorities in the Midlands area and considers how such minorities have shaped and been affected by the history of the region, as well as their representation in written texts and the media. Articles include interdisciplinary investigations on the arts, humanities and social sciences.
In addition to the exploration of the circumstances of these individuals and communities past and present, the issue contemplates broader historical and contemporary developments, as the collection of articles reveals how identity, relationships and culture are formed.
The special issue features research on topics varying from British bhangra music and black Midlanders on television in the 60s and 70s to local histories of migration and settlement in Birmingham. A brief introduction to the issue and the full table of contents is available online. Malcolm Dick, is delighted with the production of this issue: “These contributions enable us to draw conclusions about ways of seeing the history of ethnic communities outside as well as within the Midlands.”
